I’m Happy It’s Finished

The blog challenge question asks what is the biggest step I’ve taken this year.  I must say that finishing the downstairs has been the biggest project I have ever tackled.  We have been working on getting started for years.  We had contractors in to give bids, accepted bids – they never show, write or call – they obviously didn’t want the job.  So, I just went ahead and became my own contractor – and personally undertook hiring and coordinating the framer, electrician, dry waller, plumber, and finishing carpenter.  I did all the stuff I could do – 5 coats of paint, laid the vinyl flooring, and, of course, all the decorating and organizing of the space.  But when all was said and done – I now have space for all of the things I wanted it for.  The exerise equipment has its own room and a full bath, a full living area with kitchenette, dining table (for games) and living room – all for the kids to play in without worry.  Needless to say, my favorite area is my own art studio.  A place to call my own, and I have my supplies out and at hand – but not where any one dropping by would see the mess!

By doing the contracting and some of the jobs myself – the overall cost was less than a third of the bids we had received.  I am happy we did it, I’m glad it’s done, and I don’t think I’d be up for such an undertaking any time soon (or ever, perhaps!)

That is a great accomplishment! I’m still trying to figure mine out? I remember having a hard time finding a contractor for our dinning room remodel too!

You are my new hero! I would SO do that, but my SO is just not as adventurous as I would like for him to be.

Good for you for finally having the space that you want!

Wow! That is something to be proud of. I work in commercial architecture so I have a sense of just how much work undertaking the G.C. can be. WTG for taking on that challenge and seeing it through!

The room looks fabulous! Where is the photo of your studio?

Oh, I’m still looking for someone to come do my basement but people I call don’t seem to need my money either. When are you available to start? :)

Thanks, Tina – yes, I don’t know what is with contractors these days – I guess they keep getting bigger jobs.

Katy – My SO is NOT the handyman – but I come from a long line of female builders, and women who care for their houses by themselves, so I just dug deep and thought – it isn’t rocket science, surely I can do this.

Thanks Sarah and Toni, I’m happier by the day – as the the memory of how hard it was fades – I enjoy it more!

Hi Linda, yep, I know, I should post pictures – BUT – it’s a mess. Maybe after the busy Christmas crafting season I can get around to making it neat enough to photograph! Right now I have stamps, inks, papers, and all sorts of cutters out and working! But, on the other hand – there’s always a new card or project being posted!
